THE FLAG

This is where the flag came to die,
Bruised by patriotism that was a lie.
The false promises of a tomorrow unknown
The laws abided by beings dead and gone.
This is where our flag came to die
Under the shroud of false jubilation.

They shouted ‘unity’ from the top
While they tightened the grip on our throats
They asked for peace and forgiveness
While they hacked and butchered neighbours
They advocated for development
But reigned destruction on the world
So when they sang nationalism
It was a sore dirge to our flag.

They set a murderer on the peddle stone
And sent a saviours to the gallows
They corralled hope to the shadows
And looted the coffer of the widows
They scorched the earth and demanded grain
Then stood tall to proclaim their gain
With the flag scarred at their feet.

Now the rivers run red
The air is thick with death
The soil cinders and ash
The people’s teeth gnash
The faded flag covered in dust
This is where our flag came to die
This is where our land found its demise.
This rag in which we had pride.
