THE HEDGE

Behind this hedge,
We hide our fall outs,
That the curious outsiders,
May not know our faults.

Behind this hedge,
We spoke in hushed tones,
That the preying ears of outsiders,
May not know our plots.

Behind this hedge,
We wept and laughed,
And kept a straight face for outsiders,
That our tiding may stay secret.

Behind this hedge,
We made love and waged war,
And forged unity while we stepped out,
That outsiders may not spot our weaknesses.

This hedge,
That once unified and protected us,
The very hedge that we took down,
To let in outsiders.

The hedge no longer is,
Now our secrets are made public,
And are fretted upon by the outsiders,
In a bid to weaken us.
